Bit by bit, they tore her down,
Clipping her wings so she couldn’t fly,
Stripping her of throne and crown,
Leaving her alone to die.

Bit by bit, she pushed to her knees —
There was no point, but she could try.
They dangled before her a ring of keys,
But the lock was twisted from inside.

Bit by bit, they tried to break her,
And bit by bit, she succumbed.
Bit by bit, they tried to take her,
And bit by bit, she was numbed.

Bit by bit, they came to realize
That breaking her was a poor token,
For a mirror cuts the deepest
When the glass is broken.

They called her a beast, but forgot
That that meant her fangs were keen —
For a beast is a beast only
When its claws are seen.
